Mix glass paint with gum arabic (approximately 3-4 drops liquid gum arabic per tablespoon powder glass paint) and water. You may need to adjust this ratio to get the texture you want.
- Apply the paint as a grisaille (smooth with badger brush). Dry completely.
- Fold the spritzer out (see tips below). With the bottom of the vertical tube fully submerged in your liquid of choice*, take a deep breath, place your lips around the black mouthpiece and blow a fine spray over the dry paint. Dry completely.
- Brush off the excess paint to reveal the texture. The amount of gum arabic that you have used will determine how easily the paint comes off and the texture achieved. Adjust as needed (more gum arabic or more paint in the mixture).
*As liquid of choice, we often use spiritus (ethanol/methanol mix), or water, or a combination of water and spiritus. Consider trying other liquids like isopropyl alcohol or vinegar for different textures.
Tips: The spritzer must be folded out to a perfect right angle, and the two tubes must be exactly, precisely aligned over each other. The vertical tube must be sufficiently pushed up so that its opening begins in the middle of the horizontal tube. Your exhalation must be full and deep, more pressed-out than breathy-out. Or it won’t work.
The amount of gum arabic and the size of the spray droplets will influence the final pattern.
Be sure to control exposure to any dust coming off the paint.
